Pachyderm Forest, Los Angeles Zoo - California

Currently under construction, new exhibits for Los Angeles Zoo's elephant exhibit bring to life asian elephants and their status in today's world. Interpretive exhibits are divided by region as visitors move around the elephant spaces. Topics address issues surrounding elephants for each region being visited. Strict attention to graphics and structural elements derived from what may actually be seen in the region was a primary goal.

Responsibilities included: exhibit design, graphic design, and documentation. Project completed while employed with The Portico Group.

Non-specific areas of the exhibit take inspiration from all regions. This elevation, from the design development package, represents life-sized corten steel sculptures and a dimensional entrance sign.

Graphics and structural element in each region were designed to look as authentic as possible. Designs for India used a postered wall and steel pipe structure to present content. The approach to graphics took inspiration from graphic design in the region and common elements, seen in each region, tied all regions together.

Graphics that carried species ID information were designed in a similar format for all regions. Each region had design motifs and colors that were used to maintain a sense of continuity from region to region.
